Hi all.

I am restarting camping again and this time have a young son to come along with me this summer. I have another younger son that will be coming along next year and hopefully, I may even be able to entice my wife into camping!
I am looking for a tent to start camping with. It will be even better if I can also use it next summer when there is the four of us, but an alternative is to buy a smaller tent for now, them sell it and buy larger tent when needed.

The main priority is something quick to put app and something not too expensive, so I'm looking for an older tent, possibly from Marktplaats. It would be beneficial for not essential if there were two bedrooms and If it makes any difference I am quite tall (1.88m).

What de waters tents would you recommend?
Also, any advice on buying from Marktplaat.

Hi Phil,

Since you want to use it for 4 people and you want a relatively cheap tent, I would recommend a Albatros. You can find lots of them on Marktplaats and for nice prices. If you buy look for all the options, like side wings and a varioluifel. And if you have to persuade your wife to go camping and she dislikes bugs look for a binnentent instead of gordijnen.

Like this one, I would ask how many weeks it is been used, under 20 it would be a nice buy.

De Waard Albatros compleet o.a. binnentent en varioluifel

Many thanks Zeeschuim. For this summer, and possibly next, there will be just two of us (me and my 2yo son). I will also be camping for weekends only, so for 2 or 3 nights. Would an albatros be too large for me and my son for a weekend?
How long would an Albatros take to set up on my own? How much quicker would a smaller tent be?

Phil - I suggest the Goudplevier should be the tent of your need

For a weekend trip trip a small tent will do. In combination with a tarp or wing. When your family gets enthousiast too. You can juice this tent for the childern in combination with a bigger model.

Small models: all the stern models (new and old), Kleine burgemeester

Inbetween: kapmeeuw, kemphaan, eenden familie

Little bit bigger: tureluur, albatros junior, de gewone zilvermeeuw, stormvogel, roerdomp
The new goudplevier and papegaaiduiker have a higher entraince!! Nice with your 1.88m

Realy big: albatros, lepelaar, vergrote zilvermeeuw

There are so many beautifull models, be aware for the de Waard virus

Thanks tombaz and Marlies.

I have looked for a Goudplevier but that seems a little (a lot!) outside my budget (around £300 max, preferably less than that!)

Marlies - what is a "de gewone zilvermeeuw" and "eenden familie"?

Of the tents mentioned, which am I likely to find here or on Marktplaats for sale for <£300, preferably with awning and side wings?
Which tents are easier / quicker to put up? Is it purely dependent on size, or is the simplicity also relevant? Some tents seem to have more poles that I think may make it slower to build.
Do all the tents have a sewn in ground sheet?
What method have people used to ship from Holland to the UK?

As a fallback from a de waard I am considering an Obelink Eldorado as they can be purchased new for £300. I appreciate this is not de waard quality, but it appears to offer most of what I want and also has the safety of buying from a trader rather than risking buying private. Only thing missing is side wings and sewn in groundsheet (and de waard quality, but for the money I may not be able to get a de waard suitable..

PS thanks for all the help you are giving.

I would take an albatros, then you are ready for a maximum of 4 people. If it is bad weather, you also have a large indoor area. In addition, setting up an albatros may be on average 15 minutes longer than the other tents of de waard.

good luck in finding a albatros

ps maby a forum lid can look at the tent for you.

Thanks Stefwalski. Why is the Albatross slower to put up? Is it because we of its large size? I thought that because it has a simple pole arrwngement it would be quite quick. How long would it take to put up an albatross rod comps ed to an albatross junior or zilvermeuuw or papegaaiduiker or goudplevier?
Ps what is a forum lid?
Also, do,people go weekend camping in their albatros's or would they use something smaller? Most of the camping I will be doing will be weekends.

What you are asking for, is a tent that will do for 2-person weekend trips, but also will do if you decide to go camping with the whole family. I don't think that exists, so you may want to have a smaller tent for the weekends, and a larger for after you convince the rest of to family to join in on the camping trips and have longer stays.

Good luck deciding what you need. You may end up with a larger number of tents that you could have imagined ;-)

Thank not. How long would an albatross take to put up? Is it too large for weekends do you think?

We take 1,5 to 2 hours to put up our large de Waard. That is including the side awning (do you call it that? - wind shields), inner tent and putting up the beds and the kitchen. Not sure what time we need for only the tent. And if you do not have any extra options, that would really decrease the needed time. I would think, half an hour or so for only the base albatros, including curtains, would be a good estimate.

We put up the base Albatros in 30 minutes, with 2 people An Albatros has more pegs then e.g. a Roerdomp. But the availability of an Albatros for a low price on Marktplaats is huge instead of the smaller models.
But if you find a Stormvogel (33 pegs, 13 groundsheet pens) or Roerdomp (33 pegs, 13 groundsheet pens) or (a bit smaller) a Albatros Jr.3 (30 pegs, 20 groundsheet pens) or (a bit larger) Jan van Gent (36 pegs and 20 groundsheet pens) for a nice price then you have the best of both worlds. Less pegs, roomy for 2 people, and okay for 2 adults and 2 kids under 10. And if you find them with side awnings and a varioluifel you have a very adequate nice outdoor space if you are with 4 people, but for a weekend with 2 you only use the zonneluifel for a faster start of campingweekend. My personal favorite is the Roerdomp since the sleeping quarters are bit larger.
